An unforgettable experience

Why this trek?

This 7-day expedition takes you across the heart of Los Nevados National Natural Park, connecting the landscapes of Tolima and Quindío through high-altitude páramos, Andean cloud forests and spectacular volcanic terrain.

The journey combines some of the region’s most rewarding mountain experiences: the opportunity to summit Nevado del Tolima, climb Paramillo del Quindío and recover in the natural hot springs of Termales del Cañón, located at over 4,000 meters above sea level. With remote campsites, challenging trails and vast mountain landscapes, this trek is designed for those seeking a deeper and more demanding experience in the Colombian Andes

ITINERARIO

7 days of epic mountain landscapes, challenging summits and an unforgettable journey through Los Nevados.

Ibagué to Palomar

Approximately 105 km by vehicle

1.100 – 3.000 m a.s.l

We depart from the city of Ibagué in private transportation from the hotel to the bus terminal, where we board a local bus to the town of Anzoátegui. After enjoying lunch, we continue by 4×4 vehicle for approximately three hours to the village of Palomar, where we will have dinner and spend the night in the beautiful Valle de Amberes.

La Punta to Vancouver

aprox. 10 km

3,000- 3,600 m a.s.l

After an early breakfast, we continue by 4×4 vehicle for about 40 minutes to La Punta, the starting point of our hike. Beginning at 3,000 meters (9,843 ft), we trek through the subpáramo and páramo ecosystems, visiting the stunning Bomboná Lagoon, a high-altitude lake located at 3,600 meters (11,811 ft). We then continue to Vancouver Mountain Refuge, where we will enjoy dinner and spend the night

Termales de Cañón

15 km

3.750  – 4.050 m a.s.l

After breakfast, we continue our trek toward the Cañón Páramo, passing Cerro del Águila before reaching the Termales del Cañón campsite. Here, we’ll relax beneath the stars and enjoy a therapeutic soak in natural hot springs at over 4,000 meters (13,120 ft) above sea level—the perfect reward after a full day of hiking.

Arenales Base Camp

aprox. 6 km

4.000 – 4.450 m a.s.l

After breakfast, we leave the hot springs and continue our ascent through the transition from the páramo to the superpáramo, arriving at Arenales Base Camp at approximately 4,500 meters (14,764 ft). The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization before our summit attempt, which begins in the early hours of the following morning.

Nevado del Tolima Summit Attempt – Romerales Páramo

15 km

3.750  – 5.200 m a.s.l

Around 2:00 a.m., we begin the most demanding stage of the expedition: the ascent to the summit of Nevado del Tolima. The route crosses three distinct sections: a steep sandy slope leading from the superpáramo to the glacial moraine, a rocky section, and finally the glacier.

At the glacier’s edge, we’ll put on our mountaineering equipment before climbing the final 200 vertical meters to reach the summit. From the top, we’ll enjoy spectacular sunrise views over the Central Andes before descending to Romerales Farm, where we’ll spend the night.

Approach to Paramillo del Quindío

aprox. 18.2 km

3.750 – 4.750 m a.s.l

After breakfast, we continue the traverse toward Paramillo del Quindío, an extinct volcano famous for its colorful volcanic landscapes shaped by ancient eruptions. From its summit, we’ll enjoy one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in the Central Andes before descending to Buenos Aires Farm, where dinner and accommodation await.

Descent to Cocora Valley

14 km

2.400 – 3.750 m a.s.l

Our final day takes us down through the Cárdenas Creek Canyon, offering breathtaking scenery and opportunities to spot native birds, wildlife, and the ancient Quimbaya burial sites. The trail continues through the iconic Quindío wax palm forests before reaching the beautiful Cocora Valley. Transportation will be waiting to take us to the charming town of Salento, where we’ll enjoy a well-earned lunch before concluding our adventure.
