TOUR DESCRIPTION

If you have limited time to explore Los Nevados National Natural Park, this tour is ideal for you. In just two days, you will visit one of the most impressive high-altitude ecosystems in the Colombian Andes, where you can enjoy stunning mountain landscapes and unique vegetation.

Throughout the journey, you will be amazed by the frailejones, a natural wonder found in only four countries in the Americas, with Colombia being home to more than half of the world’s páramo ecosystems.

The frailejón, or Espeletia, was formally described by botanist Alexander von Humboldt and is an iconic plant of the páramo, endemic to the region. With its large, velvety leaves, it is perfectly adapted to the extreme conditions of cold temperatures and high solar radiation.

Frailejones play a crucial role in this ecosystem by capturing and filtering water from the clouds and mist that pass through these mountains, helping to maintain the moisture that sustains the páramo.

The páramo is also home to a rich variety of endemic wildlife, including species that can only be found in this unique corner of the planet.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Cocora Valley to a Local Farmhouse

Elevation: 2,400 m – 3,750 m a.s.l.
Distance: Approx. 12 km

We will start early with a delicious breakfast in Salento before heading to Cocora Valley, the starting point of our trek. We will begin our hike among the wax palms, the tallest palm trees in the world, as we make our way into the cloud forest.

As we gain elevation, the landscape gradually changes from cloud forest to high-Andean forest and then to the sub-páramo, a transitional ecosystem where the first frailejones and other plants adapted to the cold begin to appear.

Our day ends at a local farmhouse located at 3,750 meters above sea level, still within the sub-páramo. Here, we will enjoy a warm dinner and spend the night with a privileged view of the Cárdenas River Canyon.

Maximum Elevation: 4,200 m a.s.l.

After an early breakfast at the farmhouse, we will begin our ascent toward the Andean páramo, one of the most important ecosystems in Los Nevados National Natural Park.

During the trek, we will reach a maximum elevation of 4,200 meters above sea level, where we will enjoy spectacular views of Paramillo del Quindío and Nevado del Tolima, surrounded by landscapes covered with frailejones.

We will then begin our descent along a different route, enjoying the changing landscapes, the transition between ecosystems, and the possibility of observing birds and other species native to the region.

Further down, following the San José River Canyon, the trail will lead us back toward the wax palm forests and Cocora Valley. There, our transportation will be waiting to take us back to the beautiful town of Salento, where we will have lunch and bring our adventure to an end.
