TOUR DESCRIPTION
The Machín Volcano Expedition is a two-day, one-night adventure, ideal for those who want to explore mountain trails and discover one of Colombia’s most enigmatic volcanoes.
This experience combines nature, geology, and adventure. Machín Volcano is an active stratovolcano covered in lush vegetation, surrounded by hot springs where you will have the opportunity to relax, as well as beautiful mountain forests.
The expedition also includes a hike through the Carbonera Wax Palm Sanctuary, located on the way to the volcano, where you can admire the iconic wax palms and the surrounding landscapes.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Salento – Carbonera – Machín Volcano Crater
We will begin this journey in a 4×4 vehicle from Salento, ascending along rural roads toward Alto de La Línea at 3,300 meters above sea level. From there, we will continue to Carbonera at 2,900 meters above sea level, home to the densest wax palm forest in the world, protected within a natural reserve.
We will take a hike through a cloud forest ecosystem, surrounded by giant wax palms and unique biodiversity.
We will then continue our expedition to Machín Volcano, whose crater is covered in vegetation. Here, we will take another exploratory hike through its mountainous surroundings.
Finally, we will end the day at hot springs fed by the volcanic activity of Machín Volcano. In this relaxing setting, we will spend the night at a local accommodation and enjoy dinner.
Day 2: Hot Springs, Hiking, and Return to Salento via the Camino Nacional
We will start the following morning with a relaxing soak in the hot springs, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. After this moment of relaxation, we will have breakfast before beginning our journey back.
We will travel by vehicle to a strategic point along a section of the Camino Nacional, a historic route that has been used since colonial times. From there, we will take our final hike through the cloud forest, eventually reaching Salento, where our adventure comes to an end.
